Literacy, online learning and community involvement.
- Most students meet the literacy requirement by passing the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test, usually in the school year after Grade 9. A student who has passed it may not write it again.3,1
- The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course (OLC4O) also meets the requirement, and its credit can count as the Grade 11 or 12 English credit. Mature students may enrol in it without first writing the test.1
- Private schools may not offer adjudication for the literacy requirement and use the literacy course instead. They may offer adjudication for the financial literacy requirement.1
- An online learning credit comes from a course delivered entirely online. A parent or guardian, a student aged 18 or older, or a student of 16 or 17 who has withdrawn from parental control may opt out, and the transcript then records the requirement as non-applicable.4
- The 40 hours of community involvement can be done at any time in secondary school, from the summer before Grade 9, and the principal decides whether the requirement is met.1,5
- The financial literacy requirement uses modules developed by TVO in Grade 10 Career Studies, with two attempts in the course, and is recorded on the Ontario Student Transcript.1
Credits, substitutions and the other certificates.
- One credit is granted for a course scheduled for at least 110 hours, with a mark of 50 per cent or more, and a half credit may be granted for each 55-hour part of a 110-hour course the Ministry developed. The principal grants credits on behalf of the Minister of Education.2
- The principal may substitute up to 3 compulsory credits with courses from other subject areas.1
- College-delivered dual credits count as optional credits only, up to 4. Locally developed compulsory credit courses may count as up to 7 compulsory credits.2
- Inspected private schools may develop religious education credit courses, as locally developed courses with Ministry approval, for up to 4 optional credits.2
- The Ontario Secondary School Certificate is granted on request to a student who leaves secondary school on reaching age 18 without the OSSD: 14 credits, 7 compulsory and 7 optional.1
- The Certificate of Accomplishment is for a student who leaves secondary school on reaching age 18 without the OSSD or the OSSC, and is issued with the Ontario Student Transcript.1
The course types and the course code.
A common course code has five characters: three for the subject, one for the grade (1 for Grade 9 to 4 for Grade 12) and one for the course type.
| Code | Course type | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| W | De-streamed | One Grade 9 course for all students, preparing every student for senior courses: MTH1W, SNC1W, ENL1W and CGC1W.2,7 |
| D | Academic | Grade 10, and Grade 9 French as a second language. Theory and abstract problems, on the subject’s essential concepts.2 |
| P | Applied | Grade 10. The subject’s essential concepts through practical applications and concrete examples.2 |
| O | Open | Grades 9 to 12. One set of expectations for every student, not designed around university, college or workplace entry.2 |
| C | College preparation | Grades 11 and 12. The entrance requirements of most college programs, apprenticeships or other training.2 |
| U | University preparation | Grades 11 and 12. The entrance requirements of university programs.2 |
| M | University/college preparation | Grades 11 and 12. Programs offered at both universities and colleges.2 |
| E | Workplace preparation | Grades 11 and 12. Entering the workforce after graduation, or some apprenticeships and training programs.2 |
Ontario Schools also names locally developed compulsory credit courses, locally developed optional courses, and alternative non-credit courses, whose codes begin with K.

A summary, not the policy. The diploma’s requirements are set in Ontario Schools, Kindergarten to Grade 12, chapter 6, and the memoranda it names. This page sums them up from those pages as they read on 5 October 2026.
Nothing here is legal advice. A student’s own record decides what they still need, and the principal grants the credits.
Mark the course work and keep the gradebook in one place.
Margin marks each submission against the teacher’s rubric or marking scheme and keeps a gradebook per class, started from an Ontario, IB, BC, letter-grade, percent or custom scheme. Every mark is a draft until a teacher signs it.
Starting is free: sign up with an email, no card needed, and Margin marks a limited number of papers free. After that, choose a plan to keep marking.

Questions about this resource.
Anything else, write to support@elevategrade.com.
How many credits does the OSSD require?
30, for every current cohort. Students who entered Grade 9 in 2024-25 or later earn 17 compulsory and 13 optional credits; students who entered in September 2023 or earlier, 18 compulsory and 12 optional. At least 2 of the 30 are earned online, unless the student is opted out.
What is the technological education requirement?
Students entering Grade 9 in September 2024 or later must earn a Grade 9 or 10 technological education credit as one of their compulsory credits. Every Grade 9 and 10 course in the 2024 technological education curriculum, TAS1O and TAS2O among them, meets it.
When does the financial literacy requirement apply?
To students who enter Grade 9 in 2025-26 or later, from the 2026-27 school year. It is completed inside the compulsory Grade 10 Career Studies course: a mark of 70 per cent or higher on the modules, which count for 5 per cent of the course mark.
Can a private school use adjudication for the literacy requirement?
No. Ontario Schools says private schools and First Nation or federally operated schools cannot offer adjudication for the literacy requirement and use the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course instead. They may offer adjudication for the financial literacy requirement.
